ortegas folk art

By Gerardo ortega

Featured Artist: Gerardo Ortega and his brothers have been creating surrealist pieces using the “Barro Betus” technique for 45 years in Santa Cruz de las Huertas, Tonalá, Jalisco. This handmade process involves drying and baking clay pieces, painting them with colorful acrylics, and finishing with a glossy “Betus Oil” bath. Their highly valued art is celebrated both in Mexico and abroad, earning invitations to international events and numerous awards for their creativity and authenticity.

Supporting Talent

As part of a platform to foster creativity and entrepreneurship, bringing together the community to celebrate and support local talent, each weekend a guest artist conducts a live art demonstration, actively engaging with visitors and highlighting their craft. Guest cooks offer culinary arts demonstrations, as well.

International artist feature

Market Days also pairs with La Villita’s new Artist in Residence program in collaboration with the Mexican Secretary of Tourism. Market Days will welcome a Mexican guest artist and showcase his or her work each week, starting with members of the renowned Fuentes family from Oaxaca.

A cultural and artistic landmark

Market Days serves to enrich San Antonio’s cultural landscape and revitalize La Villita, ensuring its continued significance as a cultural and artistic landmark. It’s all part of a new slate of programming at La Villita this year, including expanded programing this fall, with Friday night markets, Sunday Market Days and Live Music events, cooking demonstrations, and annual festivals like the new German-style Beer Festival, the colorful Day of the Dead San Antonio, and heartwarming holiday events held throughout the village and along the River Walk.
